During my time as QA Analyst, I found these 5 principles helped me a lot to succeed as QA team member:
1. Be a team player
Focus on team’s goals
We can see it in most sports. There are no team sports in which one player does it all.
You may have done a stellar job on the part of a job you were responsible for, but that matters very little if the overall project fails to achieve the target.
Instead, think about it this way. The team is your boat. If your boat is sinking and you can do something, just do it. Hence, you need to put in what’s needed to keep the boat together.
Help others to succeed
Take an interest in your teammates. They are responsible for your success and failures. You are responsible for their success and failures.
When you got stuck and need your teammates help, you are responsible to make them understand about the problem. Gather all details first, share those, and make clear statements. Help them to help you to succeed.
2. Take ownership
Start taking initiative and find the solution when you run into problems
Instead of placing the blame on someone or something else when a problem arises, take ownership of the issue and work towards solving it yourself.
You are the only one who can accomplish your goals and fix your problems. While there are people in your life who will support you, you need to rely on yourself to achieve success.
Develop deep understanding of products behavior to help identifying defects
You are the ambassador of products. When someone confuse about it, they will reach you first.
Learn your company products end-to-end especially the ones assigned to you. Read the product documentation and when you are unable find relevant information, reach out to technical lead of the product.
3. Be proactive
Thinking and acting ahead of anticipated events
Think about what is likely to happen in your future. By thinking about potential issues that could arise and being aware of possible future changes, you’ll be able to plan and act accordingly.
For example, if you know that you’ll be assigned to test a new feature, start prepare test case and find the right timing to ask discuss with the development team.
Participate actively instead of just observing
Proactive people don’t sit on the sidelines or just listen to other people’s suggestions. Take action and start actively participating, whether it’s by providing input during job meetings or coming up with your own plans.
4. Get the job done correctly and in timely manner
You want to establish yourself as trustworthy—someone who produces high-quality work in a timely fashion.
Reliability is especially important during group projects; after all, if you miss a deadline, your mistake can negatively affect the entire team.
Lastly, don’t submit sloppy work and don’t left job hanging. Your team counts on you. And you want to inspire trust. A great deal of productivity is lost when your team has to recheck your work.
If you don’t understand, ask for details
In Indonesia, we have this saying:
“Malu bertanya, sesat di jalan”.
“If you are shy of asking questions, you will get lost in your way”.
Make sure you understand the expected result of the tasks assigned to you.
5. Practice continuous development
Looking for ways to do a better job is part of our daily work. As QA team member you are encouraged to participate in our team meeting; evaluate what’s working well, what needs to be added or tweaked; and share it to other team member.
You have to look for ways to automate mundane or repetitive tasks so you have more time to contribute your valuable expertise. Take advantage of many available free resource to improve your specialized skills.
