(Part 3/Final part) Creating business dashboard: Implementation

Continuing from previous article: elements and design process, now we practise to create a business dashboard.

This time, we use manufacturing KPIs in the dashboard.

Case:

Suppose a production manager from a fabric company wants to monitor factory performance. He gets frustrated because he can’t get factory progress data in real-time.

Data resources are available but the data processing was done manually. This situation makes him receiving today’s report in the next day.


1. Identify user requirements

In this step, we approach the manager to elicit his requirements.

Suppose that here are the results:

  • As a production manager, I want to see production output trend so that I can order raw material on schedule;
  • As a production manager, I want to compare current production status with this month target so that I can share reports with marketing team;
  • As a production manager, I want to view machines downtime so that I can coordinate with maintenance manager.

From discussion with him, we also got existing company manufacturing KPIs. In this practice, we take sample from slideshare :

2. Formulate hypothesis

There are 8 manufacturing KPIs from above table.

Based on discussion with production manager, we decided to show 5 KPIs with sequence:

  • Production output,
  • Waste,
  • Downtime,
  • Number of incidents, and
  • Maintenance cost.

3. Designing dashboard wireframe

Iteration#1

We used 1 panel for each KPIs:

We put KPI title and sample data inside each dashboard panel:

Overall result of this iteration:

Iteration#2

We proposed to add pie charts inside Maintenance Cost panel so that the manager can view last 2 months trend.

After discussion with Production manager, we added KPI Capacity Utilization as replacement of pie chart inside Maintenance Cost panel.

At this point, we are succeeded to create a dashboard wireframe.

For next, we can apply this wireframe into various forms including web dashboard, presentation slide, and mobile application.

We close this article with recalling 3 key activities that may help you to design a business dashboard:

  • discuss with users to understand their requirements and issues,
  • treat solution as hypothesis, and
  • put clarity before beauty when sketching.
